By now, it seems quite likely that the world is at the eve of a new trade war. We witness new blanket tariff announcements and retaliations almost daily now. But reciprocal tariffs, taxes on digital services, new customs duties on steel and aluminum and various challenges in the WTO dispute settlement body (the DSB) also raise uncertainty. In the meantime, the European Union has concluded an FTA and an investment agreement with Singapore and Vietnam, an FTA with Thailand is just around the corner, and a first-of-its-kind Digital FTA ('EUSDTA') with Singapore has been agreed upon. All this is going on while the largest 'Mega FTAs', the RCEP (which includes AFTA, China and many others) and the CPTPP (which includes several of Cambodia's key trade partners such as Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam) are just getting up to speed. Are these FTAs still useful in a trade war context? Join expert speaker Edwin Vanderbruggen, Senior Partner at Andersen in Cambodia and Vietnam, lecturer at the Foreign Trade University in Hanoi in a practical review of what is happening in international trade law today. Stephen Higgins, Managing Partner at Mekong Strategic Capital will also share his insights during a presentation. Highlights to expect: What do the so-called reciprocal tariffs mean for Cambodia? Are the US assumptions justified? Are countries allowed to increase their tariffs under WTO or FTA rules? What can other states or firms do about it? If firms move their production say from China to Cambodia and Vietnam, will products then qualify for lower customs duties? It's not just goods: How are banks, telecoms, tourism, digital and other service providers dragged into a trade war? Market access and national treatment commitments under WTO GATS and under EU FTAs Looking ahead at WTO challenges in Geneva: Is the WTO dispute system built to handle what is happening today? What if the export market attacks you for dumping products? Real life examples of the calculation of anti-dumping duties How to strategically plan your supply chain and the 'rules of origin': case study Where do you find the applicable Cambodian or FTA customs duty rates, practically? How are the modern EU FTA's different? The new commitments on sustainability in modern FTAs
